Lawrencia Bembenek was born on August 15, 1958 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of a Milwaukee police officer and a homemaker. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she earned a degree in criminal justice. Bembenek began her career as a police officer in Milwaukee in 1980. She was later hired as a security guard at a local hospital. In 1982, she was hired as a Milwaukee police officer. In 1981, Bembenek was accused of murdering her husband's ex-wife, Christine Schultz. She was convicted of the crime in 1982 and sentenced to life in prison. Bembenek maintained her innocence throughout her trial and imprisonment. In 1990, Bembenek escaped from prison and fled to Canada. She was eventually captured and returned to prison. In 1992, she was released on parole. In the years following her release, Bembenek wrote a book about her experience, Woman on the Run, and appeared on television shows such as The Oprah Winfrey Show and Larry King Live.
