Lee Petty was an American stock car racing driver and team owner. He was the patriarch of NASCAR's "first family" of racing, as the father of Richard Petty and Maurice Petty. He was the first three-time winner of the Daytona 500, and was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1997. Petty began racing in 1949, and won the first of his 54 career victories in 1950. He won the NASCAR championship in 1954, and won the Daytona 500 three times, in 1959, 1964, and 1966. He was the first driver to win the Daytona 500 three times. Petty retired from racing in 1964, and founded Petty Enterprises, a racing team that would become one of the most successful in NASCAR history. He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2011. At the time of his death in 2000, Petty had won 54 races and had earned over $2 million in winnings. He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and their four children, Richard, Maurice, Lynda, and Sharon.

Crashed with Johnny Beauchamp in 1961 at Daytona. He was in the hospital for four months from his injuries. He raced in four more short track races, until he retired. Beauchamp never raced again.
