Crump graduated from the University of Louisville in 1979 with a degree in communications. He began his career in journalism at WLKY-TV in Louisville, Kentucky, where he worked as a reporter and anchor. He then moved to WBTV in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he worked as a reporter and anchor for more than 25 years. In addition to his work as a journalist, Crump is also an award-winning filmmaker. He has produced and directed several documentaries, including "The Last Lynching in America," which won the Peabody Award in 2006. He has also produced and directed several short films, including "The Last Lynching in America: The Legacy of Racial Terror," which won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Historical Programming in 2008. Crump is currently the host of the weekly public affairs program "Charlotte Talks" on WFAE-FM in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also the host of the weekly podcast "The Crump Report."
