Farrell began her career as a model in New York City, appearing in magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. She made her acting debut in the 1986 film Back to School, and went on to appear in films such as The Big Easy (1987), Solar Crisis (1990), and The Temp (1993). In 1993, Farrell was cast as Jadzia Dax in the science fiction series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She remained with the show until its conclusion in 1999. She also appeared in the television series Becker, and had a recurring role in the series The Drew Carey Show.
